About the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS)

The CHKS is the largest statewide student survey of resiliency, protective factors, risk behaviors and school climate in the nation. The California Department of Education (CDE) has funded the CHKS since 1997 to provide data to assist schools in 1) fostering safe and supportive school climates, social-emotional competencies, and engagement in learning; 2) preventing youth health-risk behaviors and other barriers to academic achievement; and 3) promoting positive youth development, resiliency, and well-being. A thorough understanding of the scope and nature of these student behaviors, attitudes, experiences and supports is essential for guiding school improvement and academic, prevention and health programs.
